Math and Science
To teach math or science in New York State, candidates must have a degree in math or in biology, chemistry, physics, or earth science. Due to hiring need, we are able to offer Math Immersion and Science Immersion programs to Fellows who did not major in math or science but who do have a strong academic background in the subject area to train to teach math or science and make up the deficient coursework required for New York State certification in their content area over the course of their graduate program.
To be eligible for our Math Immersion program, candidates must have earned a B or better in at least one college level Calculus course (or a 4 or 5 on an AP Calculus exam).
To be eligible for our Science Immersion program, candidates must have earned 12 credits of college level coursework in the sciences or 9 science credits within a single science core area (biology, chemistry, physics, or earth science).
Math and Science Immersion Fellows begin training two weeks before their peers in order to begin immersing themselves in content area specific university coursework. They do receive an additional stipend for the additional time spent in training. 2018 Immersion Fellows earned an additional $500 for the two extra weeks of training.
